Thousands of animals will once again be sacrificed worldwide on the occasion of Eidul-Adha. This qurbani (sacrifice) has been described as the “Sunnah of your Father Ebrahim (alaihis salaam)”. Sayyiduna Ebrahim (alaihis salaam) was commanded to offer his little son Sayyiduna Ismail (alaihis salaam) as a sacrifice. He submitted himself to the command of Allah Ta’ala and in compliance to the command he firmly passed the knife over the throat of his son. Allah Ta’ala prevented the knife from cutting and Sayyiduna Ismail (alaihis salaam) was spared.

The Dearest Action

Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) said, “On the tenth of Zul-Hijjah (the day of qurbaani) there is no action of the son of Aadam (alaihis salaam) more dear to Allah Ta’ala than the sacrificing of animals. The sacrificed animal will come on the Day of Judgment with its horns, hair and hooves (to be weighed in reward). The sacrifice is also accepted by Allah Ta’ala before the blood reaches the ground. Therefore sacrifice with an open and happy heart.” (Tirmizi #1493)

Certain actions on specific days have a special reward attached to them. The sacrificing of animals during the days of sacrifice is one such action that is most beloved to Allah Ta’ala and most rewarding. Thus qurbaani should be done with a heart full of joy. It should not be taken as a burden. After all, there is only good and benefit for us in doing our qurbaani.

Alhamdulillah, at the occasion of Eidul Adha, our children get very excited about seeing the animals of qurbaani, feeding them and playing with them. This is a great quality since it keeps the spirit of qurbaani alive in our communities. However we need to take it one step further and explain to them the true significance and real lessons of qurbaani. This could be done by relating to them the incident of Sayyiduna Ebrahim and Sayyiduna Ismaeel (alaihimas salaam).

Qurbaani, the sacrificing of animals, is a unique act of worship. It is not something that we rush through to get over with it. Rather we should be patient and enjoy every bit of sacrifice that comes with it. Let us try and slaughter the animal at our own homes with our own hands. It is totally against the spirit of qurbaani that for the sake of convenience or cutting costs one merely sends the money to some other country where one’s qurbaani is done. In doing so, the spirit and enthusiasm of qurbaani is destroyed.
