Rules of a Muslim Home (#13) – Entering the Home

When entering the home, one should first recite the sunnah du‘aa and thereafter make salaam to the household members in an audible manner. The sunnah du‘aa to be recited is:

 اَللّهُمَّ إِنِّيْ أَسْأَلُكَ خَيْرَ الْمَوْلِجْ وَخَيْرَ الْمَخْرَجْ بِسْمِ اللهِ وَلَجْنَا وَبِسْمِ اللهِ خَرَجْنَا وَعَلَى اللهِ رَبِّنَا تَوَكَّلْنَا

O Allah! I ask You for the blessings of entering the home and the blessings of exiting the home. In the name of Allah we enter and in the name of Allah we exit, and on Allah alone, our Sustainer, we rely. (Sunan Abi Dawood #5096)

Anas (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) reports that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) said to him, “O my beloved son! When you enter (your home) into the presence of your family then make salaam, as it will be a means of barakah for you and your family.” (Sunan Tirmizi #2698)

By taking the name of Allah Ta‘ala and reciting the du‘aa before entering, one safeguards and protects his home from the Shayaateen and Jinnaat.

Jaabir (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) reports that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) said, “When a man enters his home and takes the name of Allah Ta‘ala when entering and when eating, then Shaitaan says (addressing all the other Shayaateen), ‘There is no place for you to spend the night here and there is no meal for you.’ When a man enters and does not take the name of Allah Ta‘ala, then Shaitaan says (to the other Shayaateen), ‘You have secured a place to spend the night.’ When he does not take the name of Allah Ta‘ala before eating, Shaitaan says (to the other Shayaateen), ‘You have secured a meal.’”.
