When Abdullah bin Mas`ood (radiyallahu anhu) was on his death bed, Uthmaan (radiyallahu anhu) who was the khalifah at that time asked him if he should fix a monthly allowance from the public treasury to assist his daughters after his demise. Abdullah bin Mas`ood (radiyallahu anhu) replied: “Do you fear poverty on my daughters? I have instructed them to recite Surah Waaqi`ah every night, and I heard Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) saying: “The one who recites Surah Waaqi`ah every night will never experience poverty.” (Shu`abul Imaan #2267/ Usdul Ghaabah vol. 3, pg. 77).This was the hallmark in the lives of the Sahaabah (radiyallahu anhum) that they had firm conviction upon the words of Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wa sallam). Hence they practised on the teachings of Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wa sallam). Today we impress on our children the importance of degrees and professions.

While these are means of earning one’s livelihood, they have no guarantee. It is therefore necessary that we introduce our children towards the regular performance of salaah and daily recitation of the Quraan Majeed, the guaranteed means of drawing sustenance.

In one narration Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) instructs us to teach our women Surah Waaqi`ah as it is a surah that brings in wealth (Dailami #4005). Women in particular have been instructed to recite Surah Waaqi`ah since they very easily succumb to the thoughts and fear of poverty.

Once Faatimah (radiyallahu anha) had requested Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) for a slave (servant) to assist her with all the difficult chores of the home. Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) said to her and Ali (radiyallah anhu): “Should I not show you something better than what you asked for? When you retire to your bed, recite Subhanallah 33 times, Alhamdulillah 33 times and Allahu-Akbar 34 times. This is better for you than a servant” (Saheeh Bukhari #3705).

Nabi (sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) said: “After the Taqwa (fear) of Allah Ta`ala, there is no favour that a believer may receive better than a pious wife. If he instructs her she obeys him, if he looks towards her, she brings delight to him, if  he takes an oath for her to do something she carries it out and if he is away from her (on a journey, etc.) she acts in good faith regarding her personal self and his wealth” (Ibnu Maajah #1857).
