Asmaa (radhiyallahu ‘anha) was the sister of ‘Aaisha (radhiyallahu ‘anha). When she had reached old age and became blind, her son Munzir bin Zubair (rahimahullah) bought her a garment. When she felt the material, she immediately returned it to him saying: “Take it back, I don’t want this garment.” He tells her: “But what’s wrong with it? It’s a normal garment and it’s not see-through.” She replied: “O Munzir, although it is not transparent, (it is tight fitting and) it still describes the figure of a woman.” (Tabaqaat Ibni Sa’d vol. 8, pg. 199)

Lesson: Asmaa (radhiyallahu ‘anha) gives us total insight of what the clothing of a woman should be and she sets the standard for it. She explains that the garment being non-transparent is not the only issue about a woman’s clothing; rather it is equally essential for it not to be tight fitting and body hugging. It must not only be a black cloak or a black scarf, but it must be an item of clothing that doesn’t describe the figure of a woman and does not hold an attraction.
