Conviction of the Women of the Ansaar

Once in the gathering of ‘Aaisha (radhiyallahu ‘anha), the virtue of the women of the Quraish was discussed. Aaisha (radhiyallahu ‘anha) said: “Definitely the women of the Quraish have their virtue and merit. However, by Allah, I have not seen women who are more virtuous and possess greater faith and conviction in the book of Allah Ta‘ala than the women of the Ansaar. When the verse ‘They should cover their bosoms with their scarves’ was revealed, the men went home and recited it to their womenfolk. Immediately every one of them cut off a piece from her shawl and used it to cover herself. This was as a result of the conviction and faith that they possessed in the words of Allah Ta‘ala.” (Tafseer Ibni Abi Haatim #14406 & Sunan Abi Dawood #4100)

Lessons:

1. Despite knowing very well that we are required to dress modestly and cover our beauty, many do not do so. Similarly, we generally know what is right and wrong, yet we do not practice accordingly. One of the main reasons for this is that we lack the desired level of faith and conviction in the promises and warnings of Allah Ta‘ala and the blessed words of His Rasul (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam). Constantly speaking about material possessions and admiring the luxuries of this world has convinced us that “money can do”. The need of the hour is for us to discuss and read about our Allah Ta‘ala and His deen to such an extent that we truly believe in His words and in the blessed statements of His Beloved (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam).

2. The women of the Ansaar responded immediately to the command of Allah Ta‘ala without making any excuses or justifications. Similarly when we are informed of the laws of deen, we need to “do and die” and not ask “who and why”.
