The Greater Qurbaani

The immense rewards of qurbaani are mindboggling. One’s sins are forgiven before the first drop of blood of the animal falls onto the ground. A person’s reward will be equivalent to the number of strands of hair or fibre of wool on the animal he is slaughtering. Likewise many other great rewards have been promised for this very great ‘ibaadah. Hence, can you imagine a reward greater than this? Indeed, Allah Ta‘ala loves something even more than sacrificing animals and blesses the one who undertakes it with greater rewards. Hadhrat ‘Abdullah bin ‘Abbaas (radhiyallahu ‘anhuma) reported that once on the day of ‘Eid-ul-Adha Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) said : “There is no action more virtuous than the spilling of blood (qurbaani) on this day, except the joining of family ties (that have been severed).” (at-Targheeb 2/154)

An Accepted Qurbaani – How?

When Sayyiduna Aadam and Hawwa (‘alaihimas salaam) came to live in the world and started having children, it so happened that they had twins from every pregnancy, one of the two being a boy, while the other, a girl.

When the issue of marriage came, since there was no one other than brothers and sisters - and a brother cannot be married to his sister - Allah Ta‘ala instructed that the boy born from one set of twins should marry the girl born from the other set of twins and vice-versa. But, the girl born with the first boy, Qaabil, was beautiful while the girl born with the second boy, Haabil, was unattractive. When the time of marriage came, the unattractive girl born with Haabil fell to the lot of Qaabil according to the law. This enraged Qaabil. He turned hostile to Haabil and started insisting that the girl born with him should be given to him in marriage.

Ten Best Days

Last Updated on Saturday, 03 September 2016 09:53

Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) said: “On no day is the worship of Allah Ta‘ala more beloved than in the first ten days of Zul-Hijjah. The fasts of each of these days are equal to the fast of an entire year, and the worship of each of these nights is equal to the worship of laylatul qadr (the night of power).” (Sunan Tirmizi #758)

Imagine being told that if you work on a particular day, you will receive an entire year’s salary! No one will let such an opportunity pass by. Instead he/she will “grab it with both hands”. Here we are afforded the good fortune of receiving an entire years fasting for each day that we will fast. To crown it all, we are guaranteed the worship of laylatul qadr by night, whereas in Ramadhaan we need to search for it. It is now for us to take advantage of this golden opportunity and earn the maximum benefit.

My Jewellery and Zakaat

Last Updated on Wednesday, 18 June 2014 15:22

Many of us have gold and silver jewellery upon which zakaat is payable, but unfortunately we are not discharging our zakaat. Some have the incorrect notion that they are not earning themselves and do not have cash, hence they are not liable for zakaat on jewellery. This is incorrect. In such a case either the husband may pay the zakaat of the wife with her prior permission or she may sell a piece of her jewellery and pay her zakaat.

The same ruling applies to qurbaani (the sacrificing of an animal at ‘Eidul Adhaa). Although the wife does not have cash at hand, she does have jewellery to the value of nisaab. Here too the husband may perform the qurbaani on his wife’s behalf with her prior permission or she may sell some of her jewellery and offer her qurbaani. Let not our jewellery become a barrier and an obstacle in us reaching the pleasure of our Allah Ta‘ala. Discharging our zakaat and qurbaani will be clear signs of our bond with Allah Ta‘ala.
