There was a woman by the name of Hind al-Khus al-Iyadiyyah. She was one of the wealthy women in the pre Islamic times, well known for her intelligence, wit, eloquence and words of wisdom. Inspite of being a woman of position and honour amongst her people, she committed adultery with her slave boy. People asked her: “Of all people, what made you commit adultery with your slave boy whereas you are a leading woman of your tribe? Why not with a free person instead?” So she replied: “The factors which prompted me to commit adultery and that too with a slave, were two. One was that we had easy accessibility to each other due to living in the same place, and the second factor was long chats.” (Risaalatul Mustarshideen – Pg: 177)

Lesson: Being in privacy with strange men or casually chatting with them may eventually lead one to falling into the most despicable of actions and thereby bringing her perpetual disgrace. These two factors are the highly inflammable ingredients that cause explosion and destruction.

More addictive than alcohol and cigarettes! This is the conclusion of a study conducted in Germany with regard to the effects of social media such as Facebook, Twitter and other such platforms. Describing this addiction, The Elon Journal of Undergraduate Research in Communications, vol. 2, no.1 states: “This generation has made social media their top priority and continues to need more usage in order to feel satisfied.”

Instant Gratification

The internet and social media outlets have “reprogrammed” the way millions of people think and how they conduct themselves. This is, as some researchers describe it, due to “this interactive world’s power to alter the tangible world.” Indeed it has “altered” many things. According to another study, “some behaviour consequences of the new digital brain is hyperactivity, inattention, depression and multitasking mania.” The study further states: “All this access and vast selection is causing some entertainment seekers brain to develop the constant need for instant gratification with a loss of patience.” Companies are also taking note of the negative impact on productivity as a result of people constantly fiddling with their phones during work time. As one director put it: “We're clearly seeing what psychologists call 'online compulsive disorder' spill over from our personal lives to the work environment."

How am I Travelling?

Abu Sa’eed Khudri (radiyallahu anhu) reports that Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) said: “It is not permissible for a woman who believes in Allah Ta’ala and the last day that she travels for three days or more (the shar’ee safr distance which is equal to 77km nowadays) except with her father, son, husband, brother or any other mahram” (Saheeh Muslim #1340).

Like many other commands of shari’ah, unfortunately the injunction of not travelling long distances (more than 77km), by road or air, without a mahram is also being boldly violated by many women. A mahram refers to that male relative with whom nikah is never permissible under any circumstances, such as one’s father, brother, son, etc. The laws of deen are for our own protection. The greatest benefit of obeying these laws is that we will please Allah Ta’ala, our Creator and Sustainer. However, there are innumerable worldly benefits that come with obedience to the commands of Allah Ta’ala as well.
