(Sayyidah Ummu Habeebah [radhiyallahu ‘anha] – Part Five)

Ummu Habeebah (radhiyallahu ‘anha) passed away in the year 44 A.H. during the rule of her brother, Mu‘aawiyah (radhiyallahu ‘anhu).

Shortly before her demise she called ‘Aaishah (radhiyallahu ‘anha) and said, “It is possible that misunderstandings could have occurred between us which sometimes occur between co-wives. May Allah Ta‘ala forgive us and overlook anything that may have happened. On my part, I forgive you for anything that might have transpired.” ‘Aaishah (radhiyallahu ‘anha) responded by making a similar du‘aa for Ummu Habeebah (radhiyallahu ‘anha) and also forgiving her. Hearing this, Ummu Habeebah (radhiyallahu ‘anha) was delighted and exclaimed, “You have made me happy, may Allah Ta‘ala make you happy as well!” Ummu Habeebah (radhiyallahu ‘anha) also asked her other co-wife, Ummu Salamah (radhiyallahu ‘anha), for forgiveness in a similar manner.

Toothbrush? Check! Charger? Here! Hairbrush? Packed! Clothing? In the bag! Visa? Oh no, we haven’t got that!

Before embarking on any trip, especially to a foreign country, every traveller makes certain preparations. Although packing the appropriate provisions and essentials forms an important part of the preparation, perhaps the most important part is for one to ensure that their travel documents are in order. When one arrives in a foreign land, the very first thing examined is the passport and visa. If they are in order, one will be granted entry and the remainder of the trip will be ‘smooth sailing’. However, if there is a problem with the passport or visa, then since the very first requirement has not been met, packing all the essentials and converting all the currency will be of little avail and assistance.

Often, we have the perception that ‘earning great reward’ from Allah Ta‘ala is something that will require immense effort, energy and action. However, Allah Ta‘ala, out of His infinite mercy, has blessed us with numerous avenues through which we can easily earn immense rewards with a minimum effort. One of these avenues is the sunnah of visiting the sick.

In this regard, Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) has mentioned, “There is no person who visits someone who is sick in the evening, except that seventy thousand angels come out with him, making du‘aa for his forgiveness until the morning, and he will receive a garden in Jannah. And there is no person who visits someone who is sick in the morning, except that seventy thousand angels come out with him, making du‘aa for his forgiveness until the evening, and he will receive a garden in Jannah.” (Sunan Abi Dawood #3098)

Ibnul Furaat was a minister in the fourth century of Islam during the reign of the ‘Abbaasi ruler, Al-Muqtadir billah. (Siyaru Aa’laamin Nubalaa vol. 14, pg. 474)

On one occasion, Ibnul Furaat summoned a certain scribe and said the following to him:

Woe to you! I had sinister intentions in your regard and always wanted to arrest you and confiscate your wealth. However, for a few nights, I have been seeing a strange dream. In this dream, I myself issued the order for your arrest. However, you were somehow resisting arrest. So I next ordered my soldiers to attack you, but whenever they fired an arrow at you or attempted to strike you with a weapon, you successfully defended yourself with a loaf of bread that you held in your hand. On account of this bread, none of our attacks could reach you. Tell me, what is the secret behind this bread?
