Introduction

Children love stories, and good stories have valuable lessons in them. Thus a very easy way to instil morals and values in our children is through story-telling. In this section, we will be guided as to how to present stories to our children and how to follow them up with lessons.

Ask our children:

1. Who controls everything in the world?

2. If we lose something, can Allah Ta‘ala return it to us?

3. Who must we turn to, when in difficulty?

Now tell them the story:

Once there was a poor man sitting all sad on the sea-shore, looking at the waves rise and fall. He was thinking to himself: “How nice it would be if my life also goes up like the waves and that I become rich.” Just then a strange person came and gave him a priceless pearl. The poor man was full of joy and he thanked the person from the bottom of his heart. The poor person decided to have a quick swim before returning home. He left the pearl next to his clothes on the sea-shore and jumped into the water. When he came out, the pearl was nowhere to be seen. The poor man returned home very sad and told his wife what had happened. She reminded him that Allah Ta‘ala will definitely give them something better in return for the lost pearl.

Ask our children:

1. If someone has something which you like, can you take it without the person’s permission?

2. Is it better to have a little which belongs to you, or a lot which you have stolen from others?

Now tell them the story:

Once there was a naughty little boy who lived with his uncle on a farm. All around the farm there were big beautiful trees. The farmers from the nearby farms would often stop for a while and rest under the shade of the trees. Their carts were always full of juicy fruit ready to be sold at the market.

Ask our children:

1. If it is your desire to buy a very expensive toy, and for this you save all your spending money everyday, after one month will you take all your money that was saved and throw it away?

2. If you spent the whole day building a huge sandcastle, then when it is just about complete will you take a spade and break it down?

3. If it was a very hot day and you managed to fast the entire day and there is one minute remaining for the sun to set, will you have a sip of water and break your fast a minute before it’s time?

Ask our children:

1. Before we do anything, should we tell our parents first?

2. If Allah Ta’ala has given more than we need, should we share with the poor?

Now tell them the story:

Once there was a little boy. He was very kind and loving and he always listened to his mother and father. Every morning he used to have a good breakfast and then go to madrasah with four slices of lunch - two slices for the first break and the remaining two slices for the second break.

After one month of madrasah, his mother noticed that he had lost weight. It was strange to see him return home every afternoon very weak and extremely hungry. She was quite worried, so she asked him if there was anything troubling him. He at once said that everything was fine.
