The Opening Chapter

Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) said: “Surah Faatihah is the greatest surah in the Quraan.” (Saheeh Bukhari #4474)

Jibreel (alaihis salaam) was once sitting with Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) when a thunderous sound was heard from the sky. Looking towards the sky, Jibreel (alaihis salaam) said that a door of the heavens was opened, which was never opened before. An angel came to Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) and said: “Listen to the glad tidings, that two celestial lights will be revealed to you, which have never been granted to any other Nabi before you: Faatihul Kitaab and the concluding verses of Surah Baqarah. Allah Ta’ala will certainly fulfill the request made when reciting these verses.” (Saheeh Muslim #1877)

In the name of Allah Ta’ala, the all merciful, the very merciful .

Note: This is the translation of the Arabic word Ar-Rahman and Ar-Rahim. Both are attributes of Allah Ta’ala, denoting his extreme mercy. The difference between the two is that Rahman indicates the extensive nature of his mercy, hence it is translated as “All Merciful”, while Rahim refers to its intensive quality and therefore it is rendered as “Very Merciful”

All Praise belongs to Allah Ta’ala, the Lord of the worlds.

The all merciful, the very merciful.

The master of the day of Requital.

You alone do we worship, and from you alone do we seek help.

Take us on the straight path.

Those on whom you have bestowed your grace.

Not of those who have incurred your wrath, nor of those who have gone astray.
