Allah Ta‘ala had blessed our beloved Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) with the best character and best manners.

Since he grew up in the city of Makkah Mukarramah, the people of Makkah Mukarramah had seen him grow up from a small child. The people of Makkah Mukarramah would explain that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) grew up as the most respected of his people. He was the person with the best character from everyone. He would always worry about whether his neighbours were well or needed anything. He was the most tolerant and would not fight and argue with people. He was also the most truthful and trustworthy, and he stayed far away from all evil and sins. This is why his people gave him the title of Al-Ameen (the one you can trust).

Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah bin Abil Hamsaa (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) mentions the following story, explaining how Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) always kept his promises. He says,

Once I did some business with Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam), before he became the Nabi of Allah Ta‘ala. Because I owed Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) some money, and needed to pay him, I promised him that I would go and fetch the money and would come back soon to pay him.

However, after I went home to fetch the money, I completely forgot that I was supposed to go back immediately and pay Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam). It was only after three days that I remembered that I had promised to go back with the money. The moment I remembered my promise, I went back to the place where we had promised to meet.

When I arrived there, I was surprised to see that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) was still waiting for me. Because he promised me that he would wait for me to come back with the money, he had come to that place, every day, and waited for me! When I gave him the money, he said to me, “You have made it difficult for me. I have been waiting here for you for the last three days.”

Lessons:

1. Every Muslim must try to be like Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) because he is our role model in life. We must try to have excellent character and good manners, and try to get all the good qualities and habits that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) had in his life.

2. If we make a promise to someone, we must try our best to fulfil it. If we know that we will not be able to fulfil a promise, then we must not make the promise.
