Question:

Assalaamu alaikum

I attended the Uswatul Muslimah marriage course and had a question.

Dating was discussed as well as zina, but these topics are very broad. I’m attending full time studies at… There is a Muslim boy at campus who hangs out with my friends and sits with us at specific lectures. He occasionally makes small talk about work and campus.

In the course, it was said that Prophet (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) had advised that zina should be avoided at all costs. I just wanted some clarification I guess. It feels silly talking about this but I love Allah, and I rather feel silly if it means I ensure I don’t disappoint him. Any advice will be helpful.

Jazakallah for taking the time to read this.

Firstly, we commend you on your concern to know what is pleasing to Allah Ta‘ala. There is nothing wrong in clarifying a deeni issue although it may seem silly. In fact, it is a very great thing.

Secondly, Allah Ta‘ala is our Creator, Sustainer and Nourisher. Our first allegiance is to Him. If we break His commands, we will invite His displeasure in this world and the Hereafter. Therefore, do not associate with any non-mahram (i.e. such a male whom it is permissible for you to marry). Even this small talk is impermissible. Allah Ta‘ala says in the Quraan Majeed: “Do not go close to fornication”. This can result in much more serious sins. Huge fires are lit with small sparks.

May Allah Ta‘ala enable you to do those things that are pleasing to Him.
