Letter:

Respected Maulana,

As-Salaamu ‘Alaikum

Please advise me in respect to the following.

I would like to know if it is a sin to have a very clean and beautiful house? I hope I am not attached to worldly things, but the carpet in my lounge is torn and I want to buy a new one. I also want to paint my kitchen since the walls are peeling and looking dirty. And I want other items for my home whereby I can make my everyday tasks easy and have time for more Ibaadah – instead of working and cleaning all the time.

Wa-alaykumus Salaam waRahmatullah

So long as we do not go overboard in our spending, by living beyond our means, or being extravagant and wasteful, then to purchase such items or spend money in improving the home, is permissible. There is no sin in this.

However, it should go without saying that our intention should not be to “show off” or rival with others.

Alhamdulillah, your intention is for convenience, ease, and comfort for your guests. Masha-Allah, the intention is a good intention.

Of course, if your husband cannot afford all that you would like to have, then patience should be adopted. You should not make demands if it is not within his means. Allah Ta’ala will reward you and will, Insha-Allah, open up those avenues of ease and comfort at some stage or the other.

Was-Salaamu ‘alaykum waRahmatullahi waBarakaatuhu
