Respected ‘Ulama

Two years ago, a Christian girl reverted to Islam. We, the Muslim girls around her, welcomed her and supported her as much as we could. She was always known to read all her salaah.

A day ago, we found out that she reverted back to Christianity. After asking her why she did so, this is the response we received: her grandfather, who is a Christian, fell ill recently. During his illness – which was concluded to be terminal – priests would visit him and pray for him. He was later cured and the doctors considered this a miracle.

She went on to say that whenever they came to pray for him, she found a sense of peace and they left her grandfather feeling better. She says that a certain light fell upon her and she realised that Jesus (peace be upon him) was the one who cured him.

We, the girls, are in need of advice. How do we guide her back to Islam? Our intention is not to pry into her life. It is merely to try to show her the one, true light of Islam.

Explain to her that faith and belief is not something that can be based on presumptions. There are countless cases where doctors were mistaken in their diagnoses or prognosis. Furthermore, there are numerous Muslims who were miraculously cured. In fact, people of all religions will claim that certain followers of their faith were miraculously cured. Hence, miraculous recoveries are not the basis of differentiating between truth and falsehood.

Similarly, feelings and emotions can never be made the criteria, and they do not constitute a proof for an argument in any court of law. For example, many serial killers say that they only feel a sense of peace when they kill someone. However, their feeling will never ever be regarded as a valid justification in a court of law, as right and wrong is not based on feelings. Hence, just as feelings do not hold any weight in this world, they will not be accepted on the Day of Judgement.
