Sayyidah Khadeejah (radhiyallahu ‘anha) was a woman from one of the noble Arab families. Even before Islam, she was such a noble and pure woman, who stayed away from sins and evil, that the people would call her ‘Taahirah’, which means ‘the pure one’.

Allah Ta‘ala had blessed Sayyidah Khadeejah (radhiyallahu ‘anha) to be very rich and wealthy. When the Quraish would send their trade caravans to do business, then Sayyidah Khadeejah (radhiyallahu ‘anha) would also send her goods and items with someone to sell them and do business for her. However, she was so wealthy that the goods and items that she sent for business were equal to all the other people’s goods put together!

By the time Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) was twenty-five years old, he was famous in Makkah Mukarramah for his trustworthiness. All the people in Makkah Mukarramah would call him ‘Al-Ameen’, which means ‘the trustworthy one’.

Since Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) was trustworthy and honest, Sayyidah Khadeejah (radhiyallahu ‘anha) sent him a message asking him to take her goods and do business for her. She promised him that if he did her business for her, then she would pay him double the amount of money that other people were paid to do business.

Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) agreed, and so he took her goods and left for the land of Syria to do business. The slave of Sayyidah Khadeejah (radhiyallahu ‘anha), whose name was Maisarah, came with Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) on this trip.

When Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) came to a place called Busraa, he stopped for a short while and rested in the shade of a tree. In that area, there lived a Christian monk whose name was Nastoora. When he saw Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) resting in the shade of the tree, he came to him and said, “From the time of the prophet Nabi ‘Isa (‘alaihis salaam), until you, no one has sat under this tree.”

Nastoora then mentioned to Maisarah that he noticed a little bit of redness in the blessed eyes of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam). When Maisarah told him that the redness never leaves the blessed eyes of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam), then Nastoora became excited, as this was a sign of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) being the true prophet of Allah Ta‘ala.

Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) then started to trade and do business. While doing business, a certain person started to argue with him and told him, “Promise me and take an oath on the names of the idols, Laat and Uzza!” Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) immediately said, “I have never made a promise or taken an oath by Laat and ‘Uzza. In fact, even if I have to pass by these idols, I will not look at them and stay far away from them.”

When this man heard Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) say this, he realized that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) was truthful, because he stayed away from evil idols. The man also realized that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) was the final Nabi, as his description was mentioned in the books of the people before.

During this journey, Maisarah would see that in the afternoon, when the sun was hot and shining, then two angels would come and give shade to Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam). In fact, when Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) returned from Syria after finishing the business, and was entering Makkah Mukarramah, it was the time of the afternoon and two angels were shading him. Sayyidah Khadeejah (radhiyallahu ‘anha) and many other women saw the angels shading him and were amazed at what they saw.

Thereafter, Maisarah told her of the amazing things that happened with Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) on the journey. Sayyidah Khadeejah (radhiyallahu ‘anha) also saw that through the blessings of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam), her business had made more money than ever before.

Sayyidah Khadeejah (radhiyallahu ‘anha) then went to her learned cousin, Waraqah bin Nawfal. She told him about Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) – how the angels were shading him and what the Christian monk said about him. When Waraqah heard this, he said, “O Khadeejah! If this is true, then this man is definitely the prophet of Allah Ta‘ala!”
