During the year 2 A.H., Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) received information that a trade caravan, under the leadership of Abu Sufyaan (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) (who was not yet a Muslim at the time), was returning from Syria to Makkah Mukarramah.
