Nabi Moosa (‘alaihis salaam) said to his people, “Turn to Allah Ta‘ala for help and persevere. Indeed the earth belongs to Allah Ta‘ala. He causes to inherit it whom He wills from His servants, and the best outcome is for the righteous. (Surah Aa’raaf v128)

It was on the occasion of ‘Aashura that Allah Ta‘ala delivered Nabi Moosa (‘alaihis salaam) and his people, the Banu Israaeel, to safety and destroyed the tyrant Fir‘aun and his army.

Fir‘aun had subjected them to the severest forms of oppression. He had previously slaughtered their infant sons, and now planned to do it again. Since the Banu Israaeel had suffered so much already, and were now anticipating further suffering, they were in a state of extreme fear and worry.

In this state, they came to Nabi Moosa (‘alaihis salaam) who explained to them that the entire earth is in the sole control of Allah Ta‘ala. It is Allah Ta‘ala who grants power and rule in the earth. Hence, if they wished to gain control and safety, they would have to do two things: The first was to turn to Allah Ta‘ala for help and assistance by crying to Him in repentance and begging Him in du‘aa. The second was to persevere, i.e. to remain firm on Deen, by fulfilling all the commands of Allah Ta‘ala, refraining from all sins and being patient on the difficulties that come upon them.

This formula that was prescribed by Nabi Moosa (‘alaihis salaam) was not confined to the Banu Israaeel. Rather, it is a universal formula that is to be applied through all times. In times of uncertainty, fear and instability, it is implementing this formula that will bring about peace and safety.

May Allah Ta‘ala enable us all to repent sincerely, to reform our lives by giving up our evil habits and sins, and to remain steadfast on Deen, and may Allah Ta‘ala bless us all with safety and peace.
